7Qs… A peek inside the world of Tracy Reese:
What training path did you follow traditional or nontraditional?
I’d have to say I was fortunate to follow a rather traditional path. After growing up in Detroit, MI, I moved to New York to attend Parsons School of Design. Once I received my degree, I decided to move to Paris where I apprenticed under designer Martine Sitbon while working for the small contemporary firm, Arlequin. A few years later, I returned to New York and started working for Perry Ellis as the Design Director for Women’s Portfolio.
When did you really know you were born to be a Fashion Designer?
From the time I was young, I knew I wanted to create beautiful things. As a child, my mother and I would sit side by side on sewing machines for hours at a time. I always wanted to emulate my grandmother’s lady-like style and grace and designing was a way for me to do this.
Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned early in your career?
Never question what you know in your heart and don’t be afraid to follow your passions. It is so important to have a career that you enjoy and are invested in. Also, my mother and grandmother instilled in me a sense of confidence and respect that I think has taken me a long way in my career.
Who and/or what has influenced your design aesthetic?
My mother and grandmother, of course, but more so, I am inspired by all things feminine. I love using eccentric color combinations, luxurious fabrics and embellishments that enhance and celebrate being a woman. I also find inspiration at art exhibits and museums as well as my travels throughout Europe.
What is the secret to a long career in fashion?
Passion and staying true to yourself and your design beliefs; creating a line that reflects my own vision and continually yields looks that are timeless and wearable, yet fun and feminine has allowed me to be successful. Most importantly though is a rewarding job. Seeing my designs make women feel beautiful about themselves motivates me to keep creating.
For a young designer, the fashion industry can be a scary place. How do you blend the pursuit of your passion with making sound business decisions?
Make sure that you are educated on both sides of the industry. At Parsons I was taught the skills needed to be a designer and to run a business. Without a balance of both, it is hard to be successful. I thought I knew everything, but I learned quickly that I really didn’t, and knew I had to learn more about business!
Where is Tracy Reese going next?
I recently partnered with Keds to design a line of footwear, plenty by Tracy Reese for Keds, which will debut in spring 2009. I also launched my Black Label collection of evening wear during our show in September.
